What made you choose criminal defence as the area to train in?

MJ - I chose criminal defence because it’s one of the few areas of law where you can make a direct, immediate impact on someone’s life and freedom. I’m drawn to the human side of the work, standing up for individuals who often feel unheard or misunderstood. Criminal defence demands sharp thinking, resilience, and empathy, and I knew it was where I could truly make a difference while constantly developing as a lawyer.

If you could describe working in criminal defence in one word, what would it be?

MJ - Rewarding

Its intellectually, emotionally and practically demanding but more importantly rewarding

What drew you to Garrick Law in particular for your training?

MJ - What drew me to Garrick Law was the firm’s reputation for fearless, high-quality criminal defence and its commitment to representing individuals from all walks of life. I was especially impressed by the firm’s work on complex and serious cases, including financial crime and fraud, which aligns with my background in finance. The opportunity to learn from experienced solicitors who are known for their tenacity, strategic thinking, and client-focused approach made Garrick Law stand out as the ideal place to train and grow as a criminal lawyer.

Do you prefer working on fraud cases or general criminal matters — and why?

MJ - I enjoy working on both fraud cases and general criminal matters. Fraud cases naturally align with my finance background, and I find it rewarding to apply that knowledge in a legal context. But I’m equally drawn to general crime because of the variety, pace, and the direct human impact. These cases often require quick thinking, strong communication, and empathy, skills I’ve started to develop and continue to build. I think having experience in both areas makes me a more adaptable and well-rounded criminal lawyer.

What’s one thing about being a trainee solicitor that people might find surprising?

MJ - One thing people might find surprising is how much responsibility you’re given early on. Even as a trainee, you’re often trusted to manage tasks that directly impact a case, whether it’s liaising with clients, attending court, or preparing key documents. It’s challenging, but it accelerates your learning and gives you a real sense of purpose within the team.
