If you are due to appear at a sentencing hearing and there is a possibility you could be receiving a prison sentence, we empathise and understand that it is a tough reality for any individual to prepare for. Having a well-packed bag can make a big difference to your mindset and those key initial days settling into incarceration.

What can I take to Prison?
An unfortunate reality is that, on occasion , it can take time to receive approved items. So what you pack, prior to the sentencing hearing, is crucial.
Size of Prison Bag
You must be able to carry your bag into the dock. A suitcase is not recommended.
Essentials to Pack in Your Prison Bag
These approved items are permitted in the ‘starter kit’ prison bag.
Clothing for Comfort
• Underwear & Socks – Bring enough to get you through the laundry cycles
• Warm Sweater or Sweatshirt – Prison can be cold, even in summer
• Dressing Gown – For comfort and a bit of privacy
• Towel
• Flip-Flops - For showers
• Gloves & Scarf – During colder months
Toiletries
• Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Deodorant – Stick only; no aerosols or alcohol-based products.
• Electric Shaver – Razors may be prohibited or heavily controlled. Tip: Brand-new, unopened items are usually best to avoid any issues.

Shoes
• Two Pairs of Trainers – Try to choose sturdy, comfy options for walking or gym time.
Personal items
• Photos of Loved Ones – A huge morale booster

Permitted Valuables

Why This Bag Matters
Once you are incarcerated, access to even basic items can take time. Therefore, packing carefully before the hearing, ensures you are prepared and avoids you relying on others and/or waiting weeks for authorisation. The contents of this bag can be your personal toolkit for staying comfortable, staying connected, and staying you at this difficult time.
Be Prepared, Not Panicked
Whilst we concede that being remanded in custody is an extremely unsettling and difficult time, being prepared is a powerful step to retaining a positive mindset. Packing the right items provides a required sense of control. If you need help with your list and/or are unsure whether an item is allowed, make enquiries of your legal team. They will guide you on your specific facility rules.
